The Namport Ports Authority renovated the Walvis Bay K9 kennel at the port police station last month.
According to Elias Moineau, the company’s acting executive director of commercial services, the Port Authority saw the need for K9 dogs to be on the port’s premises, as they assist in the authority’s cargo handling operations. They detect illegal items such as explosives and even drugs that may enter the port via cargo entering through the port.
The kennels, which were built by Namport over 10 years ago, have reached their life span due to weather conditions in the port city.
The renovation project was led by Namport Infrastructure Maintenance Engineer Immanuel Hango with a value of N$280,000.
In 2011, Namport also donated a Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4 worth N$416,000 to the Namibian Police, bringing Namport’s total investment in the Namibian Police to N$696,000.
