SIX large reefer containers placed at various hospitals around Namibia will ease the immense strain that was experienced by mortuaries due to the large number of deaths ascribed to COVID-19 over the past two months.
The Namibian Ports Authority joined up with Maersk Namibia (PTY) Limited to donate six of the 40-foot shipping containers with refrigeration capabilities, also known as reefers to the Ministry of Health and Social Services.
Namibia’s national transport company, TransNamib, was also roped into the project.

According to Elias Mwenyo, the acting Commercial Executive of Namport, the six freezer containers will be transported by TransNamib and delivered to mortuary facilities in Windhoek, Otjiwarongo, Rehoboth, Gobabis, and Onandjokwe.
“The trio of companies hope this gesture will in some way ease the current burden experienced by the health ministry,” Mwenyo said.
He indicated that the six reefers come with a price tag of N$1 million. He added that Namport has contributed towards several initiatives over the past 16 months by donating more than N$1.5 million towards medical facilities, equipment and protective gear to curb the spread of COVID-19.
“We commiserate with the current health emergency in our country and as an entity, we realise that this enemy is not only the responsibility of government alone, but that we as a nation can only win this war if we all collectively join our efforts and resources in this fight against COVID-19,” he said.
