This morning, April 17, 2020, an employee of Grindrod Namibia Stevedoring (a third party service provider to shipping lines at the Port of Walvis Bay), lost his life in a fatal accident during operations.
The incident is reported to have occurred at around 08h30 this morning along berth number one at the Port of Walvis Bay. Namport employees together with the third party stevedore service provider immediately raised the alarm and tried to aid the deceased but he showed no signs of life. Paramedics and police officers arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and confirmed that the stevedore employee was deceased.
Over the next few hours, a number of persons (police, stevedores, surveyors and others) will attended to the incident to gather evidence, obtain information as well as inform the next of kin of the deceased.
Further details will be provided as soon as police investigations have been concluded.
Operations have at this stage been discontinued to allow for investigations and trauma counselling of the affected parties, and will resume at 19H00 this evening.
