THE Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) on Wednesday, through its Social Investment Fund, donated 20 mobile toilets to the Twaloloka informal settlement in Walvis Bay.
The toilets, valued at N$74 520, are aimed at helping to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the community and the region at large.
The ablution facilities are an addition to the four bucket toilets, which were previously shared among the close to 700 residents at the informal settlement.
Acting chief executive officer Kevin Harry, during the handover, stressed that sanitation has become a critical issue in the fight against the deadly virus.
“We will continue to monitor the requirements throughout the progression of the pandemic, and within our means do our best to continue contributing towards the national efforts to combat the virus,” Harry added.
The acting CEO further encouraged the community of Twaloloka to uphold the highest standard of hygiene to prevent the further spread of any communicable diseases.
Harry noted that Namport has also realised the need for water at the community, especially at a time when hygiene is being emphasised, and would address this issue in due course.
As part of their further contribution to educating and creating awareness of the Covid-19 virus among truck drivers of goods and services from in and around the country, Namport donated N$50 000 through the Walvis Bay Corridor Group Wellness Services. Erongo regional governor Cleophas Mutjavikua during the event expressed appreciation to Namport for the donation and called on more stakeholders to come on board and help fight the further spread of the virus.
He emphasised the need to assist the most vulnerable members of society in order to curb the spread of the virus.
“I am also humbly requesting the members here and the entire Erongo region to adhere to the president's call and avoid large crowds and maintain hygiene. We also call on residents here to take care of these toilets and ensure that they are in good condition at all times,” Mutjavikua said.
The governor emphasised that there are plans in place to improve the livelihood of the residents at the settlement. – Nampa
