Increase in TEU handling at the Port of Walvis Bay

Namport has seen an increase in handling twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers since April – September 2019, compared to the same period in 2018. Both shipped and landed TEU’s increased with 3% in total for both the Port of Walvis Bay and Port of Lüderitz
 

In the month of September, there has been a 19% increase of TEU’s shipped and 33% of TEU’s landed at the Port of Walvis Bay, in comparison to September 2018. Vessel calls have also increased in September with 13%, opposed to 2018 for the same period. The total TEU handling for September 2019 increased with 23% compared to September 2018
 

“The congestion experienced at South African ports currently, is one of the reasons for the increase in TEU handling. Some shipping lines rerouted their cargo through the Port of Walvis Bay because of the congestion”, said Mr. Raymond Visagie, Executive: Port Operations. Furthermore, he added, “Namport has made upgrades to terminal operations, which is also a contributing factor”.
 

Namport is still committed to providing the best service and competitive prices to our clients, despite the current economic situation faced by Namibia. According to Mr Immanuel Tino !Hanabeb, Executive: Commercial, the Port Authority is looking forward to seeing exceptional growth and increase in volumes in the next half of the 2019/2020 financial year. With the inauguration and commissioning of the new container terminal in August, Namport has doubled its TEU capacity from 350 000 to 750 000 TEU’s per annum.

NAMPORT APPRECIATES ITS PORT USERS

The Namibian Ports Authority held its annual Port Users event on Friday, 01 November 2019, where Namport showed appreciation to those who contribute to the success of the entity. 

Namport also received a token of appreciation from the Walvis Bay Port Users Association. In his remarks, Mr Willie Prosser, Chairperson of the Walvis Bay Port Users Association said, "It is not easy to take care of infrastructure and still provide the services, but yet Namport is doing it. We have a new container terminal and it is all about steering it forward together with the industry".

Highlighting Walvis Bay's silver jubilee, Mr Kavin Harry, Namport’s Acting Chief Executive Officer said, "Marking 25 years since the reintegration of Walvis Bay to an independent Namibia, we at Namport are also proud to be associated with, and to have been part of that epic journey, and I must say that it is thanks to all your support".
 

The function was attended by more than 100 stakeholders in the maritime fraternity, with the aim of appreciating all those who have made use of the Port’s facilities in 2019. At the same function, awards were conferred to various entities in different categories such as the Top 5 Revenue-based Clients, Top 3 Volume-based Clients and Top 3 SME’s for 2019 at the Port of Walvis Bay.
