WALVIS BAY, 24 MAR (NAMPA) - Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has encouraged cooperation amongst African nations in order to propel intra-Africa efforts.
Kenyatta, who visited the coastal town of Walvis Bay on Saturday in the company of Vice President Nangolo Mbumba, said African countries can achieve much more collectively.
He added that Kenya and Namibia, specifically, can learn a lot from each other's victories and mistakes while developing their economies.
The Head of State during his first stop at the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport), congratulated it for all the achievements it has attained so far.
He said Kenya's own port not only services the country but also operates as a service centre to surrounding land-linked countries such as Rwanda, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, amongst others.
"With Namibia being a fairly small economy in comparison to other countries, it needed to develop its economic corridors in order to facilitate trade between land linked countries and the rest of the world by establishing the Walvis Bay Corridor Group", he noted.
Namport CEO Bisey /Uirab highlighted some of the port authority's achievements over the years, including its single window initiative, which is an an online tool to facilitate the exchange of information related to trade such as import, export and transit procedures.
The system also accepts electronic payments of fees, duties and taxes required for trade transactions, he said.
Another achievement, /Uirab pointed out, is the N.dollars 4.2 billion expansion of the Walvis Bay harbour, which includes the dredging and reclamation of 40 hectares of land.
The new container terminal is expected to be completed and commissioned by August this year, he noted.
The delegation also visited the Sea Flower Pelagic fish processing factory, which is yet to be officially inaugurated.
