Otjozondjupa region was the overall winner in the Namport Maritime Debating Competition 2023

Namport recently concluded its second annual Maritime Week, a key initiative of the Namport Social Investment Fund. A noteworthy inclusion in this year's event was a vibrant debating competition skillfully organized by the Namibian Schools Debating Association with the backing of the Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture. This addition rendered the Namport Maritime Week event even more momentous.

Over the course of five days, this event gathered proficient debaters from thirteen out of Namibia's fourteen regions, providing a comprehensive representation from across the country. The participating teams included students in Grades 9-11, hailing from multiple schools within each respective region.

The Namport Maritime Week commenced with the regions debating against one another with the finals of the debating competition being held during the official opening of the Namport Maritime Week. The students were exposed to the various facilities of Namport to further understand the practical and theoretical aspects of the maritime industry.

The exciting climax featured a spirited debate between the Otjozondjupa and Kavango East regions, both vying for the coveted grand prize. The final debate centered around the motion: "This house believes that Maritime Education should be mandatory at the school level."

Following an hour of spirited deliberation, the Otjozondjupa region emerged as the victors, securing a substantial prize of N$500,000.00 for their region courtesy of Namport, along with a cash reward of N$5,000.00 per team member, generously sponsored by Engen. The  N$500,000.00 will be utilized for a commendable cause determined by the winning region, in collaboration with Namport as the primary event sponsor.
