PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To provide specialised reliability engineering and asset performance analysis for land-based port equipment and infrastructure, enabling improved reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (RAMS). The role delivers data‑driven insights, failure analysis, and reliability strategies that support maintenance optimisation, lifecycle decision‑making, and sustained operational performance. This role reports directly to the Manager: Technical Services.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Analyse asset performance, failure trends, and maintenance cost drivers to identify opportunities for cost reduction and lifecycle optimisation.
- Develop and provide life cycle cost analysis, reliability data, and failure insights to support maintenance budget planning, spares optimisation, and asset replacement decisions.
- Provide technical input to business cases, CAPEX proposals, and investment decisions related to asset reliability and availability.
- Analyse equipment performance data, maintenance history, and condition monitoring outputs to identify reliability risks and improvement opportunities.
- Develop and maintain reliability performance dashboards, reports, and analytics to support management decision‑making.
- Translate organisational and divisional objectives into reliability improvement initiatives and asset performance measures.
- Contribute specialist reliability input to medium‑ and long‑term asset management strategies, including Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) and condition‑based maintenance frameworks.
- Monitor reliability Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), availability, and utilisation.
- Participate in commissioning, acceptance testing, and performance evaluation of new or refurbished equipment to validate reliability expectations.
- Liaise with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), service providers, and contractors on reliability‑related technical matters.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement, safety awareness, accountability, and professional engineering standards.
- Supervise and develop technical teams by providing mentorship, guiding adherence to reliability and maintenance best practices, and driving continuous improvement, safety, and accountability within the function.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
- An Honours Degree [NQF Level 8] in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering.
- Certification or training in Reliability Engineering, Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), or Asset Management will be an added advantage.
- Five (5) years’ relevant experience in heavy industrial, port, mining, or manufacturing maintenance environments, of which at least two (2) years’ experience must be in reliability engineering, maintenance engineering, or asset management–related roles.
- Capable of making sound operational judgements and resolving issues promptly to minimise downtime and risk.
- Strong diagnostic capability to identify equipment, system, and process failures.
- experience in conducting thorough root cause analyses (RCA) using recognised methodologies
- High degree of professionalism, ethics, integrity and responsibility.
- Strong analytical, research and writing skills coupled with attention to detail.
- Strong leadership skills, coupled with the ability to work well within a team and individually.
- Strong negotiator, critical thinker with advanced persuasion ability, as well as the ability to make good judgements and solve problems promptly.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong working relations with stakeholders at all levels.
