Walvis Bay inaugurated

09 Aug 2019

Namibia has inaugurated its new container terminal at Walvis Bay.

The Namibia Port Authority (Namport) this month hosted Namibia’s President Hage Geingob for the inauguration of its new container terminal and cruise facility at Walvis Bay, built by China Harbour Engineering Company.

The project was funded in part by the Africa Development Bank and consists of 40ha of reclaimed land with a 600m quay. It is expected to add around 750,000 TEU to the capacity of Walvis Bay when fully completed. Namport expects the terminal to attract cargo from other African countries including Zambia, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zimbabwe.

Walvis Bay ran into delays during construction in 2017 following unforeseen issues with dredging and reclamation, and was not expected to be able to start operating till the end of 2019. It is not clear whether the inauguration this month means the port is ready for commercial operations earlier, or whether there will still be a period of testing and commissioning before operations can begin.
